Roofing squares, bundles, and rolls are different units

A roofing square is always 100 square feet, but a bundle is a manufacturer’s package. Many common field shingles use about three bundles per square, while some designer products use more. Underlayment rolls also list gross and net coverage differently. Side laps, end laps, low-slope requirements, valleys, eaves, and damaged material can change the number of rolls. Check the exact underlayment instructions rather than dividing roof area by a generic roll size.

A simple interpretation example

If the verified planning area after waste is 2,200 square feet, that equals 22 roofing squares. The final shingle order still requires the selected product’s bundles-per-square specification, plus separate starter and hip/ridge-cap quantities. The final underlayment order requires the selected roll’s net coverage after the prescribed overlaps.

What the calculator cannot see

Measure the Roof Before Estimating Materials

Accurate input matters more than calculator precision. Roof area is the combined surface area of every plane, including slope and overhangs. A simple gable roof may have two large planes; hips, dormers, valleys, additions, and low-slope transitions create more sections and more cuts.

Safe measurement sequence

  1. Sketch each plane and note whether it is gable, hip, shed, dormer, or low-slope.
  2. Record the surface area of every plane from a safe measurement method or professional report.
  3. Add the planes to find total roof square footage, then divide by 100 for base roofing squares.

  6. Identify separate roof systems; asphalt shingles should not automatically be assumed for low-slope sections.

Why pitch and complexity change the result

Pitch changes the surface area relative to the building footprint and can affect access, labor, staging, and suitable materials. Hips, valleys, dormers, and short roof sections also create more cuts and offcuts than a simple rectangular plane. That is why a single generic waste percentage is not reliable for every roof.

Materials Commonly Missing From a Shingle Takeoff

Field shingles and underlayment are only part of a complete asphalt-roofing system. Confirm whether the following items are included in the contractor’s scope or material order:

  • Starter strip at eaves and rakes
  • Hip and ridge-cap products
  • Drip edge and other edge metal
  • Valley and eave membrane where specified
  • Pipe boots, wall flashing, step flashing, and counterflashing
  • Intake and exhaust ventilation components
  • Fasteners and manufacturer-approved accessories
  • Decking repair allowance or unit price
  • Tear-off, disposal, delivery, permits, inspections, and cleanup

Felt, synthetic, and self-adhered underlayment

The correct underlayment depends on roof slope, exposure, product approval, installation sequence, and the selected shingle system. Follow the shingle and underlayment manufacturer’s current instructions.
