How the asphalt driveway estimate is assembled
Use the result as a planning checkpoint: understand the measured quantities, see which choices affect the result, and identify what still requires field verification.
Convert base depth to volume
Compacted base volume = total area × base thickness ÷ 12 ÷ 27. The calculator adds a 10% planning allowance and labels the output as base volume with waste.

What the result does not decide
The calculator does not design pavement thickness, approve drainage, classify subgrade, identify private utilities, select a mix, verify compaction, determine permits, or replace a site inspection.
A written proposal should identify demolition, preparation, drainage, materials, lift thickness, edges, access, haul-off, testing, exclusions, allowances, and concealed-condition procedures.
Before excavation or ordering material
- Verify field dimensions, elevations, drainage direction, existing pavement, and subgrade condition.
- Confirm aggregate specification, compacted lift thickness, supplier conversion factors, delivery access, and compaction equipment.
- Pre-mark the work area, contact the applicable 811 center, and wait for required utility responses before excavation.
- Confirm permit, encroachment, right-of-way, and inspection requirements with the authority responsible for the property.

The calculator combines entered area and asphalt thickness with configured material-density and planning factors. The result is an early quantity estimate; the selected mix, supplier ticket, lift design, compaction target, and field measurements control the final tonnage.
Which options affect the planning budget?
Access condition, existing-driveway removal, grading or preparation, geotextile fabric, asphalt thickness, base thickness, dimensions, and quantity can affect the displayed planning result. Only options selected in the calculator are included.
Is the displayed budget a construction quote?
No. It is a preliminary planning range, currently displayed at 85% to 115% of the calculated planning total. A site review and written proposal must confirm drainage, subgrade, demolition, materials, access, permits, testing, exclusions, and concealed conditions.
What base or asphalt thickness should I enter?
Enter a thickness from an existing design, written specification, or qualified site recommendation. The calculator measures a selected assembly; it does not design pavement thickness or determine whether the subgrade, drainage, or proposed section is suitable.
Should utilities be located before driveway excavation?
Yes. Contact 811 before excavation, pre-mark the proposed work area, wait for required responses, and follow the applicable ticket instructions. USA North 811 serves Northern California counties, while DigAlert serves the listed Southern California counties.
